One of the most important tasks a Leaving Certificate student will need to do this month is complete the CAO application form. The closing date for CAO applications is February 1 at 5.15pm.

For the 70,000-plus potential applicants to the CAO this coming year, and particularly for the almost 50,000 Leaving Certs, who are currently considering their application, the uncertainty created by the closure of all schools and colleges has given rise to much anxiety, stress, and uncertainty.

Register for the CAO by January 20, by doing so you save money. You do this by registering with the Central Applications Office (cao.ie) There are two deadlines for registering courses, depending on whether you are applying for a restricted course or an non-restricted course.

The abrupt closure of school last Thursday, which was also the deadline for all backup information for HEAR/DARE applications, left a lot of students and parents stressed and worried. If for any reason you did not manage to complete your HEAR/DARE application, for example your educational impact statement for DARE and financial documents for HEAR, l would urge you to sent in whatever you have to the CAO office now. We have not received any updates in terms of an extension to the deadline, however we are in unprecedented territory and because of this they may look favourably on your late application. All of the online information would have been completed and submitted by March 1.

The Central Applications Office normal application deadline closed at 5.15pm on Saturday February 1. A total of 73,035 people applied by this deadline. This figure does not represent the total number of CAO applicants, as a late application facility opens on March 5 and closes on the May 1 at 5.15pm.

The CAO is urging students who have not yet completed their application to do so immediately, particularly mature applicants, applicants for the HEAR or DARE schemes, or those who are thinking about applying for a restricted course.

If you hope to start an undergraduate college course in September, you need to register your application with the Central Applications Office as early as possible. The discounted fee currently stands at €45. The normal registration deadline for most applications is February 1.

For Leaving Certificate students all over the country CAO season is now under way with the opening of the online application facility on November 5.

The online CAO 'change of mind' opened on May 5. Leaving Cert students can avail of this facility until July 1. This allows applicants to have the opportunity to register a change of course choices, free of charge. Every year there is a surge in last-minute amendments to CAO applications. Students have had more time to research courses and talk to people directly in specific job sectors. The golden rule, as stated many times, is to place courses choices in genuine order of preference.
